The role

At Shutterfly, we make life’s experiences unforgettable. We believe there is extraordinary power in the self-expression. That’s why our family of brands helps customers create products and capture moments that reflect who they uniquely are.

Role Overview

The Production Artist prepares finished design files so new products and designs appear correctly on the Snapfish website. Working mostly in Adobe Photoshop, they take layered files from the design team, adapt each one to fit every product size and surface it sells on, check the creative details, and publish the finished files to the product catalog. This is hands-on creative production work: the focus is adapting visual design files and judging creative detail like color, spacing, and image quality on every product. A Level 2 does this independently on the highest-volume and most complex designs, with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Preparing and Publishing Design Files

  • Open and work in layered Photoshop files supplied by the design team.
  • Adapt each design to fit every product size, shape, and surface it sells on (for example a card front, a book cover, a mug wrap), keeping the look consistent across all of them.
  • Adjust layout, backgrounds, borders, and creative elements so the design fits each product correctly.
  • Check the finished file for visual and technical accuracy against spec, catching issues like misaligned art, wrong colors, missing layers, or text that does not fit, before it goes live.
  • Add the correct product details and publish finished files to the catalog so customers can find and personalize them.
  • Handle the most complex products and highest volumes, and adapt designs across many sizes and surfaces without step-by-step direction.
  • Own your ticket queue and set the quality bar on your own work, catching issues before they reach final review.

Defect Investigation

  • When a design shows up incorrectly on the site (art in the wrong place, missing elements, colors that look off), determine whether the problem is in the design file, the product template, or the tool, and fix it.
  • Diagnose and resolve harder defects independently, and judge when to escalate, escalating with a clear summary and a proposed fix.

Process and Improvement

  • Identify recurring problems and propose process changes, not just report them.
  • Create and maintain documentation for new processes and features.
  • Contribute to benchmarking and team standards.

Team Support and Mentorship

  • Support and train Level 1 artists on tools, process, and best practices.
  • Act as a go-to resource for workflow and tooling questions.
  • Help leads with onboarding and knowledge sharing.

Collaboration

  • Work directly with design, merchandising, and leadership to remove blockers upstream and downstream.
  • Represent the team's process needs in cross-functional conversations when asked.

Qualifications And Skills

  • 3 to 5 years as a Production Artist or equivalent hands-on production and design-file experience.
  • Advanced Adobe Photoshop skills and strong working knowledge across the Adobe Creative Suite (required).
  • Comfortable working in detailed, layered Photoshop files (layers, masks, smart objects) and adjusting artwork precisely.
  • A sharp eye for creative and visual detail: color, spacing, typography, and image quality.
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage competing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Sound judgment on when to solve, when to escalate, and how to communicate both.
  • Consistent track record of meeting quality and production standards.
  • Ability to mentor or guide less-experienced artists.
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree recommended.
  • Bonus: hands-on experience with the tools we use day to day, such as Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Office, and FigJam.

Performance Expectations

  • Autonomy: Own and deliver a full queue with minimal supervision.
  • Efficiency: Consistently meet production benchmarks on both standard and complex work.
  • Error Rate: Maintain an error rate below 5% while handling higher-complexity work.
  • Process Improvement: Drive improvements with measurable impact, not just flag them.
  • Mentorship: Help raise the capability of Level 1 artists.
