Job Description
The School of Art, Design and Art History at The University of Tulsa seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Graphic Design, beginning in August 2023. This position will also have the additional title of Creative Director of Third Floor Design and will serve as the primary mentor for Third Floor Design, our pro-bono, student-run design agency (for more information about Third Floor Design, see: https://artsandsciences.utulsa.edu/art/third-floor-design/ ). The department is seeking a vibrant individual with excellent skills in contemporary design practice who is interested in the research potential of design as an extension of social practice. Applicants should have an active art/design or industry practice and ability to teach in two or more of the following areas: typography, print design, package design, advertising and branding design, UX/UI design, design thinking, or professional practice. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the potential for developing a creative/professional practice, excellence in teaching, fostering the creative and professional growth of undergraduates, building upon existing community partnerships, and contributing enthusiastically to the university community. For detailed information about The University of Tulsa and the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences, see: https://artsandsciences.utulsa.edu Specific Responsibilities: The selected candidate will teach undergraduate level courses in graphic design to students from multiple perspectives (fine art, graphic design, game design), serve as the Creative Director for Third Floor Design, mentor students within the context of an interdisciplinary art and design school, and advise students in a tutorial environment. Primary teaching responsibilities include all introductory and upper-level graphic design courses. The position also requires teaching in the foundations core as needed. In addition to our Art and Design majors, Graphic Design courses may also interest students from Advertising, Film, Media Studies, and Computer Simulation and Gaming, as well as students from across campus through the general curriculum. Thus, the position entails working with both graphic design specialists as well as those with less experience and artistic training, often in the same course. Service to the department and the non-profit community (through Third Floor Design) is a requirement of the position. AsCreative Director for Third Floor Design, the faculty member in this position has substantial mentoring responsibilities as part of the workload. The candidate will maintain facilities, keep an active professional practice, and participate in the University and greater Tulsa community. As a member of the TU community, service responsibilities include taking an active role in curriculum development and assessment, aiding in the management of classroom equipment and resources, and making connections with related programs on campus.
Physical Demands
Standing, bending, lifting up to 25 pounds, and other requirements in a teaching and mentoring environment. Working with discipline-specific equipment and supplies. Some local travel required as Director of Third Floor Design.
Required Qualifications
M.F.A. in Graphic Design or other related discipline (or equivalent terminal degree); demonstrated knowledge of Graphic Design disciplines; potential for active and productive creative/scholarly activity, as demonstrated by exhibitions, relevant grants or awards, creative portfolio for clients and record of professional practice, and/or publications; demonstrated knowledge of industry practices in Graphic Design; and a valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
